Country & Eastern has, for over 40 years, imported and stocked a wide range of oriental handwoven rugs and kelims from Afghanistan. The rugs and Kelims are mainly woven in the North and North West of Afghanistan. This is one of the few remaining areas in the world where rugs are woven in a traditional manner as an adjunct to agriculture. The rugs and kelims are woven at home, at times when work on the land is restricted, providing a useful source of income. This differs from most other areas in the world where rugs are now manufactured in a factory environment, which often results in poor labour practices, as opposed to in weavers’ homes.
